Ispirato a un particolare di un dipinto di Lucas Cranach il Vecchio, il nuovo lavoro di Manuel Fanni Canelles racconta l'episodio dell'Albero della Conoscenza. Pur restando inalterata la dimensione sacrale, “The Tree of Knowledge” sviluppa un'indagine sul confine tra realtà e finzione, a partire proprio dai primi versetti della Genesi. Qual è il confine tra verità e rappresentazione, tra reale e virtuale, tra essere/non essere/dover essere?

Due innamorati sono seduti di fronte al mare avvolti da un'atmosfera romantica . E' un momento di confessione dei sentimenti di entrambi, nell’attesa di un bacio. Tutto sembra filare liscio quando, giunti al momento del fatidico “ti amo” l’uomo sembra dimenticarsi ciò che deve dire. La ragazza non lo realizza immediatamente, ma è questo il momento in cui si delineano due linee completamente diverse nel vedere la loro relazione: per lui è tutto un film in cui loro sono gli attori che recitano una serie di comportamenti dettati dalla società e dalla cultura per raggiungere uno scopo, e ogni tanto, sbagliando le battute, devono “rigirare” la scena per seguire bene “il copione”; per lei invece è qualcosa di molto più profondo, qualcosa che non si può descrivere e che lega l’anima di due persone. Il contrasto dei loro pensieri genera una discussione in cui ognuno non riesce a vedere i pensieri dell’altro, portando infine alla rottura della relazione. L’uomo rimane basito e, nonostante creda che sia tutto finto, sente un dolore molto profondo strisciargli addosso mentre il “film” si chiude con gli applausi del pubblico.

Le cose ti rendono dipendente e fragile. Claudia lo scopre quando torna a Lignano per la morte del padre che non vede da anni e si imbatte nel mistero di una penna appartenuta ad Hemingway.

4. Dentro la Città dei Morti

Nell'ottobre 2012 i friulani Barbara Urbano e Claudio Cescutti partono per il Cairo per documentare le fasi iniziali del Progetto Microjardin della ong Liveinslums. Una forma di agricoltura urbana viene avviata in un ambiente insolito: la Città dei Morti, il grande cimitero musulmano della città. Secondo stime non ufficiali ospita 800.000 persone che hanno occupato le tombe a corte, ancor oggi adibite alla sepoltura dei defunti, rendendole abitazioni permanenti. Il fenomeno di co-abitazione tra vivi e morti e la grande valenza storica del luogo lo rendono un caso unico al mondo. Il Progetto Microjardin costituisce, oltre ad una forma di sussistenza agro-alimentare per la comunità, un tassello di una ricerca multidisciplinare che attraverso la rivalutazione dell'area mira a preservarne il patrimonio architettonico e antropologico, fornendo un'alternativa al piano di sviluppo urbano Cairo 2050. Tale piano, ereditato dall'era Mubarak, mira a nuove e redditizie speculazioni edilizie, prevedendo la demolizione di intere sezioni del cimitero, lo sgombero e la ri-allocazione degli abitanti.

5. Il muro basso

Il titolo scelto, Il muro basso, si rifà ad un proverbio popolare che dice: “A muro basso ognuno ci si appoggia” il quale può essere tradotto come, il più debole è sempre sfruttato. Noi con questo breve cortometraggio abbiamo cercato di interpretare questo aspetto dell'esistenza, mettendo in evidenza il desiderio e il bisogno del protagonista di recuperare la propria libertà. Il protagonista vaga in cerca di uno spazio personale dove potersi esprimere. Lo trova, ma in realtà gli ripiomba addosso dimostrando che è difficile sfuggire alla quotidianità. Il cortometraggio vuole riflettere una giovane realtà sociale; nascosto dietro ad un pessimismo evidente, c'è l'invito rivolto a tutti i giovani di coltivare i propri sogni. La piccola stanza in cui il protagonista con una vecchia macchina da scrivere si abbandona al suo estro creativo è un mondo segreto, intimo e fantasioso.

6. L`imprevedibile destino dei Caugich

Il film è il racconto in chiave grottesca della autodistruttiva e morbosa famiglia Caugich. I quattro fratelli Caugich vivono in modo spartano e solitario in una casa nel bosco. Tutto prosegue in modo routinario e con ritmi sempre uguali fino a che Sergio, il più giovane, non decide di andarsene da casa per perseguire il suo sogno. Nella lettera che lascia ai fratelli, il giovane spiega i suoi motivi e apre il sipario sulla reale ed inquietante attitudine della famiglia.

7. Cinezoique

Cinezoique è l'era presente, dove il cinema lascia gli schermi ed invade tutte le superfici.
Cinezoique è un'installazione di 21 metri, una linea del tempo, una camminata lungo la storia del cinema dove i passi degli spettatori si sovrappongono a quegli degli attori. Qui ritrova la dimensione del video, dopo esserne uscito.

1. POGLEDI SKOZI ŽELEZNO ZAVESO

Carinarnica na meji med dvema mestoma, državama, družbenima sistemoma, med romanskim in slovanskim svetom, 65 let po končani vojni. 20. 12 2007 z vstopom Slovenije v schengensko območje se Nova Gorica prvič v svoji kratki zgodovini znajde brez mejnih zapornic. Isti večer se ta odsluženi travmatični prostor spremeni v prostor srečanj. V njem so nameščeni kamera, mikrofon, računalnik in zavesa, za katero je omogočeno nemoteno spominjanje. Ljudje prihajajo iz ene in druge strani, s seboj prinašajo zgodbe in podobe ter jih podarjajo v skupni album spominov obeh mest. Zaupani spomini ter fragmenti družinskih in arhivskih filmov posnetih na tem območju pripovedujejo, kako se lahko dve različni realnosti znajdeta istočasno na istem mestu. Dokumentarni video odkriva zgodbe absurda, tako značilne za vsa obmejna območja sveta.

White Box deals with space, investigating the coordinates of: who, what , when, where, why and how in relation to it to find the best means of how to create it. How to create space? This was the motivation behind White Box, to explore the landscape of space and with this confront physical space, mental space, visible space, invisible space, imaginary space, metaphorical space, all of these defined by atmosphere.

Sound Machine is the first part of a trilogy of short films set in the heart of a man with an average job. Every day after work, Mr.P. makes the sound machine that would enable him to hear the kingdom of sound vibrations, such people by nature are not able to be heard. Great invention pull him from everyday life miserable, and help him to establish a different relationship with the environment in which he is increasingly alienated.

5. SOLIDARNOST

The film is a reshot of the Joyce Wieland movie Solidarity, made in 1973, and documents workers protests in Ljubljana. It raises questions, such as: what is solidarity today, who is solidary, who with and when? Idea for the reshot of the movie emerged during current horrifying exploitation of labour, mass unemployment, impossible work conditions, restructuration of labour market and, when question of solidarity is malipulated by power structures.

Slovenia is the most prosperous one of all the countries of former Yugoslavia. After the break-up of the old country, thousands of workers from other ex-Yugoslavian republics rushed to Slovenia with hopes of better life. However, they have been exploited and have been living in terrible conditions. Can they become united again and fight for their rights?

The former recreation home for Soviet cinematographers in the Caucasus has been repurposed to accommodate writers. But that doesn't seem to work very well. At present, only Boris Martow from Moscow, a talent from the promising times of the perestroika, is on the guest list. Amidst the faded glory of the institution for privileged artists, the poet tries to overcome his continuing creative crisis.

A three-dimensional sequence is generated from raw data. The rendered sequence is projected onto the original scene in the programme, rendered again, and projected once again as a shadow map. In this final step, the rendered image is also applied as a texture on the objects in the scene. This repetition produces superimpositions of light, shadow, structure, and perspective.

6. BEIRUT BLEND

WORLD PREMIERE

"Blend" is the cut of a type of tobacco that glistens at six places in Beirut under the glowing stone of the water pipe at the film's center. "Blend" also means "mingling", "to mix". And this is precisely what happens in thirty minutes of low-key black-and-white compositions in which the portrayed talk about sports and also about Gaddafi's fortune, Arab spring and the Middle-East conflict.

This film centers on a special form of street construction. Johann Lurf documents rotunda islands in Austria, shown in segments of a few seconds, and creates something of a catalogue of local building malfunctions. The islands feature gravel, hedges or sculptures with grapevines, fountains or ornamental flowers and are furnished with traffic signs, information postings or advertisement objects.

In the letter he left to his brothers, the young man explains his reasons and opens the curtain on the real and disturbing attitude of the family.

A border crossing that divides two cities, two states and two social systems and separates the Roman world from the Slavic one. 65 years after the war, on the 20th of December 2007 Slovenia entered the Schengen area and the town of Nova Gorica finds itself united again. The same night the border crossing that witnessed many traumatic events becomes obsolete and transforms into a point of meetings. There's a camera, a microphone, a computer and a curtain that provides some privacy to the people that come into this booth to share their memories. They come from both sides of the now erased border, bringing with them stories and pictures of times past. The memories, the fragments of the family and archive films are telling a story of their own: a story about two very different realities, cohabiting at the same time at the same place. The documentary reveals absurd stories, which are typical for border-divided areas all over the world.
