Region: Slovenia

Through skiing, ski jumping, and football, Slovenians developed a sense of nationhood – often in contrast to Yugoslav identity. The director, who moved from Bosnia to Slovenia, asks who belongs in moments of national celebration—and who is left out. A poignant story with striking parallels to Austria, where winter sports have also shaped national identity.

Festivals and Awards
– 29th Festival of Slovenian Film Portorož 2026 (Competition Feature Documentary)
– 28th FDF – Documentary Film Festival Ljubljana 2026 (Premiere)

Bonus Screening:

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:

“Shout or You Are Out is my attempt to understand how a nation builds itself through sports; how skiing and ski jumping became symbols of discipline and purity, while football was pushed aside as too Balkan, too emotional. These choices reveal as much about our fear as they do about our pride.”

DIRECTOR’S BIO:

Boris Petkovič (born 1971 in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is a distinguished Slovenian filmmaker whose work successfully blends genre films for broad audiences with socially engaged documentary projects. His filmmaking is characterized by a direct approach, artistic courage, and a deep interest in contemporary social issues and alternative cultures. Petkovič studied film directing at the EICAR film school in Paris, where, after graduating (2005), he also taught before returning to Slovenia in 2008. This international experience and his work within Paris’s independent scene greatly influenced his unique and independent authorial style. Among the most renowned films he realised we find: “Naprej” (1998), “Desperado Tonic” (2004), “Paris.love” (2007), “The Beat of Love” (2015), “Balkan Whispers” (2017), “Košarkar naj bo” (2017) and “LGBT_SLO_1984” (2022). In addition to his active directing career, Boris Petkovič has been involved in informal film education for over two decades as a mentor at film workshops.
