First World War, Caporetto, Italy: The day after the Austrian army devastatingly defeated the Italian army, two Italian soldiers remain separated from their units. While trying to get together again with their fellow soldiers, they come across a Carabinieri officer gone mad because of the war. Nature around them is first filled with a strange sense of peace and tranquillity but then becomes the tragic stage of human failure.
