The voices of contemporary citizens of Fiume (Italian for Rijeka) guide us through one of the most interesting and overlooked historical events of the 20th century: the sixteen-month occupation of the city by the flamboyant Italian poet, playwright, aristocrat and army officer Gabriele D’Annunzio. Blending dramatic and humorous re-enactments with documentary, it achieves what few films can: making history feel vividly present.
